As you made have already heard, this year marks the 30th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., and although we’ve seen all sorts of cool Mario collaborations, it was starting to look like Luigi was getting left out of all the action.
Fortunately Luigi fans will have something to look forward to as Capcom and Sega have teamed up create the first arcade version of the Luigi’s Mansion series, simply titled Luigi’s Mansion Arcade.
Loyal Nintendo fans may remember the original Luigi’s Mansion that was released for Nintendo GameCube back in 2001. Although the game did extremely well overseas, it was a total flop in Japan.
Nintendo later tried again with a 3DS sequel, Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon (Luigi Mansion 2 in Japanese), managing to win over the hearts of Japanese and worldwide gamers alike. Luigi is equipped with the Poltergust 5000, a vacuum that appears to have more sucking power than a Dyson, along with a strobulb to help him stun and catch ghosts. The more ghosts players suck up, the more coins they collect as Luigi makes his way through different haunted mansions.
The idea for Luigi Mansion Arcade was proposed following the sequel’s success, and so far it doesn’t seem to deviate very much from the 3DS release. Check out Capcom’s trailer for the game below.
Perhaps the coolest thing about this new arcade version is that it arms players with a real life-size Poltergust 5000 to help Luigi fight off the supernatural. Unfortunately photography during Japanese beta testing was strictly prohibited, but we imagine they look something like this:
Using the Poltergust is simple, and according to a second game play explanation video, all you need to do is follow these four steps.
You can watch the video in full for more tips and techniques below. One cool point is that when there’s two players, if one player continues, the second player gets a full life boost, too.
Unlike many of the other horror-style shooting games that have become a staple at Japanese game centers, this looks like one that everyone can enjoy. No word on an exact release date yet, but the game is supposed to hit Japanese arcades this summer.
